MIT xPRO Launches the Chief Operating Officer (COO) Program

Created in collaboration with Emeritus, the new 9- to 12-month program provides senior executives with the mindset and practical skills to quickly assess and align day-to-day operations while driving innovation to lead performance and growth.

CAMBRIDGE, MA 2022 — MIT xPRO is launching its inaugural Chief Operating Officer (COO) Program to provide senior executives with the tools, frameworks, and insights needed to advance their careers and make an impact in their organizations. The program is being launched in collaboration with Emeritus, the global leader in making world-class professional education accessible and affordable, and enrollment is now open for a December 2022 start.

In today’s uncertain business landscape, organizations face dynamic challenges — from employee retention and digital transformation to environmental, social, and governance issues — all of which fall under the wide-ranging role of the modern COO. In fact, according to a 2022 study by PwC, 53% of COOs say that increasing agility in the face of a turbulent business environment is very important for their company to grow. The COO must be able to successfully address internal and external challenges while functioning as a strategic C-suite partner who can translate the CEO's vision into practical business solutions.

Participants will join a global cohort benefiting from the program’s in-depth curriculum, expert faculty, and invaluable networking opportunities. The program includes 19 weeks of core modules focused on the COO as a strategic partner, business transformation, and the COO as a leader. The core modules are followed by 6–10 weeks of online electives (participants choose two). The flexible program journey includes self-paced learning, engaging live sessions with faculty and guest speakers, and a dedicated success coach. Throughout, participants have the opportunity to work on executive reflections where they can apply program insights to their organization’s challenges and develop actionable solutions. The program also includes an optional two-day in-person networking event on the MIT campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Upon successful completion of the program, participants are awarded a verified certificate of completion by MIT xPRO.

“In an uncertain business environment, organizations are looking for operational leadership to translate their vision into growth-led strategies,” says MIT Senior Lecturer, David Niño, faculty director for the COO Program. “MIT xPRO’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) Program equips you to think holistically about your organization’s needs and adopt a data-driven approach to business transformation. The focus of the program is to future-proof the organization through technology-enabled strategies that deliver sustained growth and competitive value.”

The program is designed and delivered by renowned faculty who bring their cutting-edge expertise on key technology accelerators, combined with principles of organizational strategy and leadership. The cross-functional faculty are drawn from MIT’s Mechanical Engineering department, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and AeroAstro department, as well as the MIT Sloan School of Management and MIT Executive Education.

“The modern COO must be multifunctional, balancing traditional operational leadership

with driving innovation and delivering transformational change projects," says Mike Malefakis, president of university partnerships at Emeritus. “We're honored to work with MIT xPRO to provide this immersive learning journey.”

The program is currently enrolling eligible participants with a minimum of 10 years of work experience for a December 15, 2022, start date. To apply or request additional information, please visit the program page here.

Professional Certificate in Coding - November 9, 2020:

MIT xPRO, in collaboration with Emeritus, has launched a Professional Certificate in coding to help aspiring developers secure market-ready skills for a high-growth career

With employment for software developers projected to grow 22% from 2019 to 2029 (according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics), MIT xPRO’s latest full-stack coding program is designed to meet the growing demand for software developers who can leverage the power of technology for their organizations.

With this online offering, learners anywhere in the world can master web development, front-end development and React, and back-end development from MIT faculty—gaining both the tools and the edge to advance careers in software development.

MIT xPRO’s latest program is led by John R. Williams, Professor of Information Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Abel Sanchez, research scientist and executive director of MIT’s Geospatial Data Center. Williams and Sanchez teach the MERN stack (MongoDB, Express, React, and Node.js) with ReachJS, as they believe it is the best stack for a smooth, ultra-efficient development process.

The program requires 15-20 hours of commitment per week, and includes hundreds of coding demos from renowned MIT faculty and integrated coding assignments to assist participants in building composite skills. The program also offers personalized feedback, live weekly office hours with program leaders, and the opportunity for learners to develop a GitHub portfolio to showcase their coding skills and stand out in a competitive employment market.

“The demand for skilled coders who can streamline business operations is skyrocketing. Technical professionals need access to market-ready coding skills, research-backed formalized training, and a valued certificate to stand out. We are excited to offer this valuable program to aspiring and practicing software developers to help them shape successful careers,” says Sanjay Sarma, Vice President for Open Learning at MIT.

With the average software developer salary trending at USD 114K (according to Dice’s 2020 Tech Salary report), to meet the primary goal of providing the most in-demand skills, learning collaborator Emeritus will offer career preparation guidance to help participants navigate a career path into tech, craft an elevator pitch, and promote their skills effectively.

“Learning to code opens up career opportunities in a technology-driven world, and at Emeritus, we are excited to collaborate with MIT xPRO in helping furthering this vision,” says Shaun Dubash, Senior Director at Emeritus. “MIT has been at the forefront of technology innovation and with the launch of this course, aspiring professionals from across the world will have the opportunity to learn from one of the leading technology institutions in the world.”

Priced at USD 6,950, this 32-week course has flexible payment and financing options that allow learners to pay the program fee in installments that are as low as $25 a month. The course starts on December 16, 2020 and is open for enrollment now through Emeritus.
